Monitor Advice - 4k 60hz vs 1440p 144hz

Hey everyone,

I'm upgrading my desktop. My specs will be i7-8700K, RTX 2080, 16GB RAM.

I'm considering a 1440p 144hz monitor or 4k 60hz. I play every genre of gaming there is, so there are 0 limitations on that front. I've heard that 120fps is important for competitive fps games (don't care about this) but 4k 60 is better for every other genre. What are you personal thoughts/preferences?

I am concerned about RTX 2080's 4k performance in future games (higher requirements). DLSS might offset this but it's a big question mark atm. Would it be wiser to stick with 1440p now and then buy a 4k 144hz monitor further down the line when more powerful GPU's and cheaper 4k monitors are available? Or would I be wasting my time/money and just stick to 4k 60?

Thanks for the help!

I personally would recommend 3440x1440 ultrawide high refresh rate with G-Sync. It really is the best thing out at the moment. If you are not going ultrawide, then I would choose refresh rate over resolution. 1440p is a nice resolution anyway. Either way, make sure you get a G-Sync monitor.

LG is releasing a new 34 inch model soon. 34GK950G (freesync version is 34GK950F). 120Hz at 3440*1440. The freesync version supports a full 144Hz which is native for the monitor.

@horgen: @BassMan: Thank you both for the advice!

I was leaning against Ultra wide because not every game supports it and it doesn't seem worth the cost (~$500 extra).

From the research I've done, I've decided on the Asus PG279Q.

Most games support it now. But you are going to be paying a hefty price for one even over 4k.

Windows doesn't scale well to 4K. Go with QHD.

@XVision84: Smart choice going for 2K 144Hz monitor, getting 4K PC monitor is waste of money, unless you plug a 50' TV to it
